Seed: Students for Education Empowerment and Development

What we’ve done in Kenya

July 19th, 2010

Here’s a brief snapshot of what Jenny, Alison and I have done in Kenya since my arrival on April 27th:

- We started a chicken farm for SEED, which will bring in money for the organization for years to come;
- We bought 18 bicycles for students at Humwend Secondary who walk 1.5+ hours to and from school;
- We collected profiles for 80+ students to be sponsored in Kenya this year;
- We purchased shoes, bags, uniforms, textbooks, blankets, toothbrushes, beans,and maize for students at Lifunga Primary School;
- We researched the impact of our scholarship program through interviews, surveys, and quantitative data collection, and learned that our impact has been great;
- We initiated a Post-Secondary Scholarship Fund, and sponsored our first 3 students to go to University;
- We started a mentorship program at Humwend, where well-performing SEED sponsored students provide guidance to those who are not performing so well;
- We contributed to the construction of SEED Junior Academy, created budgets and reports to generate funds for the school, and took the kids on a field trip to Nairobi National Park;
- We ironed out administrative details to maintain SEED Kenya’s NGO status;
- We planted trees at Humwend, and watched them grow;
- We learned, laughed, and loved every minute of Kenya.

None of this could have been possible without the support of our friends, family, and of course SPONSORS. A huge THANKS out to Mindy Ganz, whose Ganz Foundation contributed $10,000 to make these projects possible.

This is an exciting time for SEED, and we encourage you more than ever to get involved in the movement, as we continue to significantly impact lives and invest in human potential.
